UNO Eligible for 2014-15 Hoops Postseason

The list of schools who did not meet APR qualifications, and are thus banned from the 2014-15 postseason, is out.  UNO is not on the list, though three Southland schools (Houston Baptist, Central Arkansas, Lamar) are.

New Orleans will still face level three penalties, the heaviest penalties of anyone not on the postseason ineligible list, including "practice reduction and other restrictions."

The UNO women's basketball team is also qualified for postseason after being ineligible in 2013-14.

Giavotella and Butler both back in Majors

What a Friday for Privateers Baseball alumni! Both Johnny Giavotella and Joey Butler are back on active Major League Baseball rosters.

The St. Louis Cardinals have purchased Butler's contract from Triple A Memphis. Joey was completely destroying Pacific Coast League pitching this season with an absurd OPS of 1.028. His on base percentage was .481. He homered four times and drove in 20 runs. He also walked (19 times) more than he struck out (16.) This will be Joey's first regular season action for the Cardinals. He appeared in eight games for Texas late in the 2013 season.

The Kansas City Royals have also re-called Johnny Giavotella from Triple A Omaha. This will be Gio's second appearance in KC this season. He appeared in one game earlier this season as a fill-in for frequently banged up starting second baseman Omar Infante. In Omaha, Gio had an OPS just under .900 with a homer and nine doubles. He's also walked (9 times) more than he's struck out (6.) In his one MLB appearance this year, Johnny went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

McNeese Rallies Past Privateers in 14

Chayse Marion's homer capped a
five-run second for McNeese
For the fifth time in 11 conference home games, the Privateers (11-31, 2-21) were unable to hold an early 3-0 lead, falling in a 14-inning marathon to McNeese, 10-8. Cameron Toole, who entered the game at catcher in the bottom of the 13th, won the game in the 14th with a single that drove in Lucas Quary.  Chayse Marion blasted a three-run homer for the Cowboys in the second inning.

Hezekiah Randolph and Jonathan Santana had four hits apiece for the Privateers.

UNO, winless at home in the Southland, has led in nine of 11 home contests. They've led in 15 of their 21 league losses overall.

Privateers Drop Opener to McNeese

Jonathan Santana blasted his first
homer of the season in the 1st inning
In what has been a somewhat frequent occurrence this season, the Privateers (11-30, 2-20) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at Maestri Field, only to see it dissipate.  McNeese chipped away and eventually overtook New Orleans in the 7th, going ahead for good on a throwing error by shortstop Samuel Capielano.

UNO will take on the Cowboys in game two of the series Saturday at Maestri Field starting at 2 p.m.
