UNO Drops Another One at Stopher Gym

Christavious Gill
The Privateers (9-18, 5-11) have never had much luck at Stopher Gym of late, and that trend continued on Monday as they fell 80-76 to Nicholls.

New Orleans surrendered a nine-point second half lead and, as has been the case most of the season, were unable to make the late plays needed to secure a close win.  Christavious Gill paced the UNO scoring with 19 points, and Erik Thomas added 16.

UNO returns home for the final two games of the regular season, against Southeastern on Thursday night and Northwestern State on Saturday.  Both of those games at Lakefront Arena will be doubleheaders with the women's team.

UNO Sweeps Valpo, Now 6-1

Hodge was Saturday's winning pitcher
The Privateer baseball team (6-1) swept a three-game series from Valparaiso at Maestri Field over the weekend.  New Orleans won a 9-0 blowout on Friday night, then eked out 5-3 and 9-8 wins on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Chaz Boyer contributed to UNO's early season power surge on Friday, blasting a homer down the left field line. Shawn Semple went 5 1/3 innings with a no-hitter and allowed no runs over 6 1/3.  Riley Hodge's effective start fueled Saturday's win, also going 6 1/3 and striking out seven.

Marsh drove in four on Sunday
On Sunday, New Orleans fell behind 4-0 and surrendered three homers on the afternoon, but persistent offensive production helped UNO fight back to a 9-8 victory. Preston Marsh led the way with three hits and four RBI.

A stern test awaits on Tuesday evening as the Privateers travel to Tigue Moore Field to take on nationally ranked UL Lafayette.

UNO Finds Way to Lose Another Close One

Michael Zeno
After an embarrassing night in Hammond that saw the Privateers down 31 points at the half, New Orleans had a gutty road effort at Abilene Christian end on a banked halfcourt Jaren Lewis three pointer at the buzzer.  The Privateers led 83-79 late but, keeping with the theme of the season, could not finish a tight game.  The final score was 87-84.

UNO was powered by Michael Zeno's first career double-double.  Zeno had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bucs.

New Orleans will play three games in the regular season's final week, at Nicholls on Monday followed by two home games to close out the schedule against Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State.

Barrage of Lions Threes Sink UNO

Christavious Gill
The Privateers (9-16, 5-9) were buried in a sea of Lion three-pointers in the first half on Wednesday, falling behind 55-24 at the half.  Despite a furious rally in the second half, fueled by multiple steals, New Orleans fell by a 93-81 count in Hammond.

JaMichael Hawkins of SLU went 5-for-5 on threes in the first half, and Southeastern shot 13-for-19 as a team for the game. Christavious Gill led the UNO effort with 21 points.

New Orleans next travels to Abilene Christian on Saturday.

3-0 Start: Baseball Beats La. Tech

Dean's first Division I
homer in the 7th
The Privateer baseball team hit a total of eight home runs and seven triples last year.  Through three games in the 2016 season, New Orleans already has four of each, and they came in key spots in Sunday's 9-6 victory over Louisiana Tech.

The Privateers (3-0) fell behind 1-0 before scoring three runs in the third, powered by RBI triples from returnees Preston Marsh -- who had four total hits on the day -- and Chaz Boyer.  In the fourth, UNO got two more runs courtesy of Kyle Bracey's first career homer.  After another three runs in the sixth, Dakota Dean blasted his first career homer in the seventh to cap the scoring for the Bucs.

Bracey blasts his first
Division I homer in the 4th
Daniel Martinez picked up his second save of the opening weekend, going 2 1/3 innings to preserve starter Jordan Priddle's win.  Priddle threw six effective innings on the afternoon.

Privateer Baseball is 2-0

New Orleans held back a 9th inning Grambling rally and won Saturday's contest at Barrow Stadium, 11-8.  The game was knotted 3-3 headed to the bottom of the eighth, when UNO unleashed an eight-run rally where only three hits left the infield.

Grambling rallied for five in the ninth off Jarred Taylor, who was still the game's winning pitcher, before Daniel Martinez closed things out with two strikeouts.  Newcomer Kyle Bracey had three hits for the second consecutive game to lead the Bucs.

The Privateers (2-0) conclude their part in the Urban Youth Invitational tomorrow with a 1 p.m. contest at Maestri Field against Louisiana Tech.

Privateers Dominate Baseball Opener

Randolph equaled last season's
home run total in one game
In their first game of the Urban Youth Invitational, the Privateers offense exploded for 12 runs en route to a comfortable 12-3 win over Alcorn State at Maestri Field.

New Orleans, a team that lacked hitting and particularly power hitting in 2015, exploded for seven extra base hits in the game, including a home run each from Hezekiah Randolph and newcomer Aaron Palmer.  Five different Privateers had three hits, and Palmer had 6 RBIs in his Division I debut.

Sophomore Shawn Semple pitched six excellent innings to collect the win, striking out nine.

UNO will take on Grambling at Barrow Stadium tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.  The game will be televised on the MLB Network.

Losing Skid Continues

Thomas was a nonfactor
for once, but Bucs still lost
After woeful defensive efforts at Central Arkansas and McNeese, the Privateers (8-15, 4-8) were unable to bounce back at home tonight against conference contender Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. New Orleans fell 65-57 in the Monday night contest.

UNO fell behind early, and despite holding Islander powerhouse Rashawn Thomas in check, hung around but never really recovered. They were led by Michael Zeno with 12 points.

The Privateers will now head back on the road for a Saturday battle at Northwestern State.
